The government said it has “no specific information” about reports suggesting that a vessel carrying Iranian crude oil is heading towards India. The clarification came from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways amid speculation triggered by ship tracking data indicating a possible shipment to Gujarat.
According to officials, the remarks were made during an inter-ministerial briefing on recent developments in West Asia. Earlier, tracking data had suggested that a vessel named Ping Shun could be en route to Vadinar carrying around 600,000 barrels of crude, potentially marking India’s first Iranian oil import since 2019.
However, authorities said the information could not be independently verified. Imports of Iranian crude had stopped in May 2019 following tightening of US sanctions, with India shifting to alternative suppliers in the Middle East and elsewhere.
Meanwhile, the government assured that there is no shortage of fuel in the country. Officials said sufficient quantities of petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel are available, and urged citizens to avoid panic buying amid global uncertainties.
